First celebrated in the UK in 1987, Black History Month has since developed its own distinct identity, shaped by the UK\u2019s unique history and diverse society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But why October? The month was chosen to align with the start of the academic year, encouraging schools and universities to engage from the outset. This provides opportunities for education, creativity, and reflection. Vision Libraries support this with a programme of school sessions, alongside a wide variety of community events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Black History Month in Redbridge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This October, Vision Redbridge are proud to present a programme of activities for all ages \u2013 from performances and workshops to storytelling and personal histories. Events will highlight the achievements of Black individuals in Redbridge while celebrating the deep cultural heritage of African and Caribbean communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Launch Weekend \u2013 <em>Patois<\/em> by Jeanefer Jean-Charles &amp; Associates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kick off Black History Month with <em>Patois<\/em>, a powerful performance by British-Caribbean choreographer Jeanefer Jean-Charles MBE. Blending traditional Caribbean choreography, contemporary dance and original music, <em>Patois<\/em> explores lost languages, longing and belonging, reawakening hidden voices and stories of the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Saturday 4 October<\/strong><br>11am and 2pm<br>Ken Aston Square (outside Fullwell Cross Library), Barkingside IG6 2EA<br>Free, all ages welcome \u2013 seating available<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Weekend of Culture and Colour<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside <em>Patois<\/em>, enjoy a vibrant mix of performances, workshops and art in Barkingside, in partnership with Colours of Redbridge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sakthi Fine Arts Dance Group \u2013 11:40am<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ambassadors of Dohl \u2013 2:40pm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inclusive art workshops with Barkingside Art Club (for children and young people with SEND)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arts Award Discover in a Day craft activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Home Away from Home Truck Art \u2013 a dazzling, jewellery-box installation full of colour and celebration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sunday 5 October<\/strong><br>1pm and 3pm (with BSL interpreted shows)<br>Ilford Town Centre (outside the Town Hall), IG1 1LL<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accessibility: An information point will be available on both days, offering noise-cancelling headphones, Easy Read materials and support to help you find a good viewing spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beyond October<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While Black History Month is a time of focused celebration, recognising diversity and cultural heritage is something we value year-round.
